Where's my Vote? (2009)

Vintage ceramic figurine, green cloth, PVA, vintage Action Man accessory, epoxy resin, re-touching medium, powder pigments

In 2009 after the Iranian election, there were riots in the streets. The revolution was called the green revolution and all the protestors wore green headscarves, green shirts, green bands around their arms. They were furious because Ahmadinejad won the election and they were convinced the election had been rigged. I saw some footage of a young woman shot by one of the militia, the cronies of the government who had been riding around on motorbikes shooting at people. This woman had been shot in the oesophagus and she was bleeding and then died on camera. It was a most horrific sight. I was really moved by that and wanted to make a work to show my support for those protestors and the woman. It reminds me that in other parts of the world people are prepared to fight and often die for their right to vote, so it is not a right we should take for granted.
